Pursuing the Possibility of Open Technologies in Advanced ICT Infrastructures for Affluent Society - Yuko Ito, Okinawa Open Laboratory
Okinawa Open Laboratory (OOL) has been developing, evaluating and promoting the open technologies in advanced ICT infrastructures since its foundation in 2013.  At the beginning it had started from evaluating the fusion of SDN and cloud computing technologies utilizing OpenFlow, OPNFV, OpenStack, OpenNaEF, etc. to realize the harmonized end to end solution.  Based on these results, recently it has expanded its research area to 5G, IoT and open data analysis and utilization for more comfortable and affluent society.  All those activities are based on open collaboration utilizing OSS and open technologies.  Ongoing activities and future vision will be introduced in this speech.

2020 Software-Defined Digital Partner: Network transformation: Opportunity & Challenge - Dr. Yu-Huang Chu 朱煜煌博士, Chief Scientist, Chunghwa Telecom Laboratory
The traditional role of the network operator is a connectivity provider. They focus on network stability no longer viable. During environment changes, operators are looking to network transformation as value-added service providers.
The software is increasingly playing the key role of network transformation in telecom industry and enterprise as well. It enables unprecedented levels of abstraction, disaggregation, and programmability in network infrastructures and services, so that the flexibility brings in a lot of innovations from open source community due to the avoidance of vendor lock-in. This keynote addresses how Chunghwa Telecom, the biggest fixed-mobile convergence service provider in Taiwan, continuously leverages OSS (Open Source Software) and applies innovative network softwarization technologies such as SDN and NFV, to realize network transformation and provide customers with high quality of software-defined LAN, WAN, and cloud services.

Introduction of MEF19 PoC: 5G xHaul Sharing as Slices with LSO Orchestration - Noriyoshi Yamazaki, Okinawa Open Laboratory
5G requires a huge investment in infrastructure.  Speeding up the availability of 5G services depends on increasing the ROI for 5G infrastructure providers and also making it easier for MNOs to share 5G operator wholesale access infrastructure.
Okinawa Open Laboratory is preparing a PoC at MEF19 collaborating with NTT Network Technology Laboratories and NTT Communications to demonstrate the access sharing of a Carrier Ethernet service over front haul, mid haul and backhaul infrastructure for efficient usage of 5G networks. In this PoC, 5G service quality assurance is also monitored between operators utilizing MEF APIs.

COMAC: Converged Multi Access & Core - Pingping Lin, Open Networking Foundation
The COMAC open source project, paired with the COMAC RD, has been launched to bring convergence to Operators’ mobile and broadband access and core networks. It will build upon a suite of ONF projects that are part of the CORD project umbrella. By leveraging and unifying both access and core projects, COMAC will enable greater infrastructure efficiencies as well as common subscriber authentication and service delivery capabilities so users can roam seamlessly between mobile and fixed environments while experiencing a unified experience.

Time-Controlled Experimental Platform for Open Source Networking - Mike Chih-Che Lin 林志哲, President, EstiNet Technologies Inc.
Networking research requires multiple network entities running together to form a testbed for evaluation of new technologies and techniques. In many scenarios, it is necessary to use tens to hundreds of network entities to create topologies suitable for specific research needs. Building such large experimental networks with real devices costs much regarding budget and installation efforts. Our team has enhanced the EstiNet network simulator (formerly the NCTUns network simulator) by integrating the Docker container technology into it. In the latest EstiNetX platform, we allow researchers to run multiple Linux Docker containers in a simulated network. Traditional network emulation tools (such as mininet) also run Linux containers to generate real-life network traffic, but they cannot properly control the clock of each container, which results in different elapsed time of each container during an evaluation and thus results in inaccurate quantified results. To address this issue for container-based emulation, we proposed a new approach to control, self-clock, and serialize the clocks of Docker containers involved in an emulation. This patented approach can generate accurate network emulation results by using real Linux containers running real-life programs and traffic, which will be very useful for open source networking research.
